INFRASTRUCTURE

There are many factors that affect propagation, such as light, water, temperature, etc. At GrowNurs nursery we make it our mission to control these conditions to the best of our capability to get a greater and more productive crop yield by having the best equipment one can have.

  • Our greenhouses are gutter-connected and structured in a truss formation.Truss makes for a stronger house, and gives us propagators the ability to hang plants and equipment to provide optimal space.

  • GrowNurs consists of four individual greenhouses attached side by side. These gutter-connected houses allow easy access between houses and decrease the square footage of land needed for propagation houses.

COMPUTER OPERATED FACILITIES IN THE GREENHOUSES

  • The greenhouses contain computer-controlled environment manipulation facilities including:
  • The heating and cooling equipment for heating  and cooling below the benches for better control of root zone temperature.

  •  A mechanized travelling mist boom for irrigation on movable benches

  • Forced hot air heating systems

  • Multiple forced air fans are used for improved air circulation and are controlled by either thermostats or computers.

  • Our greenhouses contain specialized fog machines.Fog is an alternative to mist for germination and propagation. Its advantages include more uniform wetting across plant area, deeper penetration into foliage, higher efficiency and lower maintenance costs.

ENVIRONMENTAL SENSORS FOR PROPAGATION

  • GROWNURS nurseries contain a weather station for detecting light intensity, wind speed and direction, external temperature:this helps regulate temperature control and the fog propagation system.

SOME OF THE MATERIALS USED AT GROWNURS

  • Since GROWNURS strives to be Eco-friendly, we use fiber pots when germinating our seeds. Fiber pots are shaped from peat plus wood fiber with the specific type of fertilizer we use for the specific cultivar we are propagating. These pot are biodegradable and are used for the germination process.

SOILS AND FERTILIZERS

The importance of using the correct soils and fertilizers are of big importance to our company. We are striving towards a greener future and using all bio-degradable products is a good start.

As previously stated we will be propagating:

  •  Avocados using the grafting and air-layering technique (with root stock from seedling)
  • Arum lilies using micro propagation (and scaling?)
  • Tomatoes using seeds and a hydroponic system
All three of these different techniques use different mediums and fertilizers for different phases of the growth of the plant or seedlings.

·         Avocados:

  • For the Cuttings

·       Medium :

1:1 - peat moss: perlite (good balance of moisture and drainage)

·       Fertilizer an Rooting Hormones:

IBA (indool botter suur) – Rooting hormone
Organic fertilizer – Fertilize only after five week transplant(1st transplant),

·       Environmental Conditions:

Indirect sunlight

·         Relative Humidity:

Increase humidity in greenhouse
± 70%

·         Extra equipment

Pot’s for cuttings

  • After about two weaks, check the progress of the cutting by tugging it gently. If you feel a slight resistance, you have a root system. After another 3 weeks, transplant cuttings into a bigger pot or in the ground.

Vegetative growth

· Environmental Conditions:

Trees should be planted from September to November when soil temps have warmed and in an area protected from wind and frost.

· Medium

Avocados are shallow rooted trees with most of their feeder roots at the top ±20 centimeters of soil. Because of this, they need to be planted in well aerated soil.

·  Fertilizer and Fungicide

That is high in Nitrogen (Nitrogen promotes shoot growth in an avocado tree). Calcium ( roots, good structure). Potassium for growth and fruit bearing. Phosphorous for a healthy metabolism. Calcium (roots, good structure). Magnesium ( photosynthesis). Iron and Manganese ( health).

Flowering Stage
· Fertilizer
To improve the quality of fruit provide Zinc and Calcium during the first 6 – 8 weeks of fruit growth.

First year:
Outdoor trees – Fertilize every month

Indoor trees –Fertilize every 3 weeks

Important Minerals:

Avocados need the right amounts of Nitrogen and Phosphorous for healthy metabolism, Potassium and Zinc in the fruit, Calcium for good structure, Magnesium for good photosynthesis capacity, and Boron, Iron, and Manganese for good health
What minerals do avocado trees use? The first four listed below are the most important minerals for avocado trees.
·         Nitrogen — for growth and development
·         Potassium — for growth and fruit bearing
·         Boron — growth
·         Zinc — fruit
·         Phosphorous — healthy metabolism
·         Calcium — roots, good structure
·         Magnesium — photosynthesis
·         Sulfur
·         Iron — health
·         Manganese — health
